On 23 May 2024, NOTICED hosted a panel discussion at Freshfields’ London office. The event brought together professionals working in the legal sector to discuss mental health challenges faced by individuals from minority backgrounds, all while enjoying drinks and canapés.
The panel featured distinguished speakers:
- James Pereira KC: Barrister at Francis Taylor Building, mental health champion, writer, and coach.
- Rabbil Sikdar: Journalist and researcher, known for his passionate writings on mental health issues affecting minority communities.
- Stephanie Mbonu: Global International Arbitration Group Project and Hearing Manager at Freshfields and co-chair of Freshfields’ Black Affinity Network.
The discussion covered a range of important topics, including recognising mental health issues versus normal stress in a fast-paced industry, the influence of cultural factors on the perception of mental health symptoms within different minority groups, additional challenges faced by those from minority ethnic backgrounds in the legal sector when dealing with mental health issues, and establishing and upholding boundaries in a challenging workspace. The panel also explored potential solutions to these issues, such as workplace initiatives to support emotional well-being, breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health within minority groups as well as enhancing mental health education and awareness initiatives which resonate with minority ethnic backgrounds.
